Ngoc Tien was born with a ventricular septal defect in his heart. At three months old, he began to lose his appetite, frequently vomited, and struggled to gain weight. When his family took him for a medical check-up, they discovered he had a congenital heart defect. After months of continuous monitoring and examinations, the doctors advised that he needed surgery as soon as possible to grow up healthy.
Ngoc Tien is the youngest of three siblings. His eldest brother is studying at university. His second brother is in grade 12. Tien’s mother used to work as a garment factory worker, but since giving birth to Tien, she has stayed home to take care of the children. Now, all the financial burden falls on the father’s shoulders – a factory worker at a battery manufacturing plant earning around 8 million VND per month. This modest income is just enough to cover daily living expenses and the children’s school fees. The cost of Tien’s surgery far exceeds the family’s financial capacity.
Understanding their difficulties, the University Medical Center HCMC guided the family in completing the application to the Scar Of Life program to request support for the surgery. Thanks to funds contributed by TikToker Jimin Young through the Scar Of Life program, Ngoc Tien underwent surgery successfully. His health has improved since the operation, allowing the family to find peace after a long and challenging journey.
