At 33 weeks of pregnancy, doctors suspected that baby Hoang Yen had a congenital heart defect. Born at 2.9 kg, she spent more than a month in the hospital due to weak health. After returning home, she often turned blue, struggled to breathe, suffered recurrent pneumonia, and required multiple emergency visits.
Cardiac tests later revealed hypoplasia of the aortic arch, a large secundum atrial septal defect, interruption of the inferior vena cava, and heart failure. Her surgery cost nearly 200 million VND, far beyond what her family living on – her father’s unstable gardening income – could afford. Her mother stayed at the hospital full-time while caring for her two school-aged sisters.
