Neonatal Care for Remote Areas

To preserve life and reduce infant mortality rates in remote areas, Vietnam Children's Fund's Infant Care program collaborates with sponsors to provide essential neonatal care equipment and training in neonatal resuscitation for doctors and nurses in rural medical centers. This initiative focuses on emergency care and treatment for preterm infants and those with neonatal diseases.

According to information presented at the Seminar on Maternal and Child Health organized by the Maternal and Child Health Department of the Ministry of Health on July 28, 2023, the neonatal mortality rate in Vietnam remains high, accounting for 70-80% of child deaths under 1 year old. Notably, in mountainous and ethnic minority areas, the infant mortality rate is the highest.

Due to the distance from healthcare facilities, many mothers in highland areas give birth at home, lacking timely and proper medical care, leading to regrettable consequences. In addition to the geographical obstacles, many ethnic minority communities encounter challenges related to teenage pregnancies resulting from the aftermath of child marriage. These circumstances contribute to high rates of infant and maternal mortality, further complicating the situation for district-level healthcare units.

In close collaboration with local government agencies and hospitals, Vietnam Children's Fund regularly conducts field surveys to research and assess the equipment and training needs. Subsequently, we collaborate with sponsor entities to implement projects to donate neonatal care equipment to hospitals and key healthcare centers in challenging areas.

The program goes beyond medical equipment sponsorship, emphasizing the enhancement of the capacity of local healthcare staff. In collaboration with major hospital partners, we organize training sessions and neonatal resuscitation workshops at district-level healthcare centers and commune health stations. Throughout its operation, the efforts of the Infant Care program by Vietnam Children's Fund have yielded positive results, saving the lives of many newborns.
